Adapted from the award-winning novel of the same name by Ian McGuire, it focuses on a disastrous whaling expedition in the 19th century. The story revolves around Patrick Sumner (played by Jack O'Connell), a notorious former battlefield doctor who becomes the ship's doctor on a whaling vessel and encounters the harpooner Henry Drax (played by Colin Farrell), a cruel and unethical killer. Sumner is not able to escape the fears of his past, but is forced to engage in a brutal struggle for survival in the Arctic wilderness.
