This drama focuses on the notorious British Labour Cabinet Minister John Stonehouse, telling the story of his life and the era he lived in. Matthew Macfadyen plays John, and Keeley Hawes plays his wife, Barbara. The story unfolds in November 1974, when John Stonehouse, a highly successful member of Harold Wilson's (played by Kevin R. McNally) government, disappears on the beach of a luxurious hotel in Florida. He leaves behind a pile of neatly folded clothes and swims into the ocean to fake his own death. Shocked the public and media believe the MP from North Walsall drowned or was eaten by sharks, leaving his beloved wife Barbara and three young children behind. Stonehouse is a charismatic, confident individual who made a profound impression on Prime Minister Harold Wilson and steadfast supporters of the Labour Party early in his parliamentary career. Coming from a working-class background, he graduated from the London School of Economics and served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, seemingly an ideal candidate for a political career. As the plot unfolds, it becomes evident that his reputation as a family man concealed the truth. Stonehouse begins an affair with his secretary Sheila Buckley (played by Emer Heatley) and becomes a spy for the Czech Secret Service in the 1960s. Stonehouse intentionally steals the identity of a recently deceased voter, but his complicated financial situation and interpersonal relationships ultimately lead to their downfall. He applies for a passport in the deceased's name and starts weaving an elaborate scheme to begin a new life in Australia. However, he is arrested by Australian police who mistakenly think he is the fugitive Lord Lucan, rendering his plans in ruins. After being brought back to the UK by detectives from the Metropolitan Police, Stonehouse finds himself crucial to maintaining a Labour majority in government.
