In the 1940s, in a small town in America that developed around oil. The local richest man, Chester Conway (played by Ned Beatty), is troubled by a matter as his son, Elm (played by Jay R. Ferguson), is about to get married. It turns out that Elm had previously had an affair with the prostitute Joyce Lakeland (played by Jessica Alba), and to avoid an embarrassing situation, Chester secretly instructs the police to expel Joyce, with the small-town cop Lou Ford (played by Casey Affleck) being the one to carry out the order. Lou appears introverted and obedient, but hides a secret. In just a few weeks of interaction, Joyce has become deeply infatuated with him. Unexpectedly, at the critical moment, Lou brutally turns against both Joyce and Elm, plunging into an irretrievable abyss of darkness... This film is based on the novel of the same name by Jim Thompson.
