The story takes place in a small town in England during the twentieth century. The two sisters, Gwendolyn (played by Glenda Jackson) and Ursula (played by Jennie Linden), share a close bond. Gwendolyn, the elder sister, works as a strict and rigid teacher at a school, while Ursula, a free-spirited painter, has just returned to her hometown seeking a life of freedom and spontaneity. At a wedding, the sisters meet two men, Rupert (played by Alan Bates) and Gerard (played by Oliver Reed). Ursula falls in love with Rupert, and they marry. Meanwhile, Gwendolyn develops an ambiguous attraction toward Gerard. The four of them go on vacation to Switzerland, where Gwendolyn encounters a charming sculptor and falls for him, which Gerard finds difficult to accept.
