In Fengjie County, where the Three Gorges construction work is ongoing, two people from Shanxi, a man and a woman, arrive. The man Han Sanming (played by Han Sanming) is from Fen Yang, a honest coal miner who comes to Fengjie in search of his ex-wife whom he hasn't seen for sixteen years. He bought her with money back in the day, and she ran back to Fengjie after giving birth. His search for his ex-wife is filled with obstacles, and Han Sanming decides to stay and work as a laborer, waiting until she appears. The woman Shen Hong (played by Zhao Tao) is from Taiyuan, a quiet nurse who comes to Fengjie searching for her husband, who hasn't contacted her for days. Though she knows that her marriage with her husband has long been nominal, she still wants him to give her an explanation in person. Shen Hong's search is also fraught with difficulties, as her husband is avoiding her, intentionally or not. Han Sanming and Shen Hong, although strangers, end up with a mysterious connection due to their relative decisions of "taking up" and "letting go."
