Edward (played by Ewan McGregor) has a passion for freedom. After becoming an adult, he chooses to leave his hometown and embark on a journey around the world. Along the way, Edward encounters a variety of bizarre characters and experiences countless thrilling adventures, with his greatest interest in later years being to incessantly recount this fantastical journey to others. Will (played by Billy Crudup) is Edward's son, who doesn't believe the strange stories his father tells and finds them immensely tedious. After getting married, he loses contact with his father for several years. When he finally hears from Edward again, he learns that his father is nearing the end of his life, and he decides to visit Edward one last time. However, this time, Will finally uncovers the secrets and truths hidden behind these stories.
