In the distant future, Earth has turned into a frozen planet. The surviving humans have migrated to outer space, establishing a prosperous colonial planet named Avalon and forming the Human Galactic Alliance with extraterrestrials. Meanwhile, a species known as the Hideous is rampant, and a protracted war ensues with the Alliance. During a battle against the Hideous' home planet, 16-year-old Second Lieutenant Red (voiced by Ishikawa Kaito) and his unit encounter fierce resistance. During their retreat, Red accidentally gets pulled into a space-time fracture and crashes with his weapon, the Chamber, into the ocean of Earth. The Chamber is salvaged by humans and taken to the Gargantia fleet, and Red finds himself bewildered by this planet, which is entirely different from his preconceived notions of humanity's origin. During this period, he communicates with a lovely girl named Amy (voiced by Kinjou Soko) and successfully helps them thwart a pirate attack, earning the trust of the Earthlings. Due to the inability to contact allies, Red can only temporarily stay on Earth. Having known only combat and obedience since childhood, he slowly awakens his deepest emotions when faced with this group of undisciplined and inefficient humans…
