Middle-aged François (Bruno Cremer) is a philosophy teacher who lives a conventional life with his charming wife in a small town. However, his 17-year-old student, Mathilde (Vanessa Paradis), appears, bringing with her a rare maturity and unruliness for someone so young. François is drawn to her with the intention of saving this fallen girl, yet he finds himself irresistibly attracted to Mathilde's passion and intelligence. They fall in love, with intense and unforgettable passion. However, when Mathilde asks François to leave his wife and be with her, he hesitates, reflecting on age, marriage, morality, and identity—too many mundane concerns. In desperation, Mathilde disrupts her teacher's life in a drastic manner, overturning his career and marriage, and then vanishes without a trace. When she is discovered again, her room contains the words, "François, this is the sea."
