The story takes place in the late Qing Dynasty in Yuhang County, Zhejiang. Yang Naiwu (played by Sun Qixin), who makes a living by writing legal documents for others, becomes infatuated with the beautiful Xiaobai Cai (played by Tao Huimin), who is already engaged. Coincidentally, Xiaobai Cai rents a house on the street owned by Yang's family, and as they get to know each other, they develop feelings for one another.
