In the second half of the 14th century, the hero Zhu Yuanzhang (played by Li Liqiun) unified the North and South and established the last feudal dynasty of the Han people, the Ming Dynasty. With the world initially stabilized but chaos still looming, Emperor Hongwu had a deep hatred for corrupt officials and thus resolved to establish a clean and honest empire, even using harsh measures to eradicate evil. He immersed himself in the populace, traveled incognito, and reinstated the system allowing citizens to report grievances directly to the emperor. With the communication between top and bottom reestablished, various harmful elements to the country's foundation, such as royal relatives, court officials, military generals, and remnants of the previous dynasty, were exposed. As these morally bankrupt individuals faced inevitable death, they struggled fiercely like cornered beasts against Zhu Hongwu's blade, leading to a series of dramatic events spanning the thirty-one years of the Hongwu era.
