The story takes place in a small town in southern Kansas, where Bud (played by Warren Beatty) is a high school student filled with wild ideas. By chance, he encounters a girl named Tinny (played by Natalie Wood). Tinny’s beauty and tenderness deeply attract Bud, making him fall in love. He even secretly vows to marry Tinny in this lifetime. However, in the conservative small town, the romance between these two young people quickly faces strong opposition from both families, who scoff at their genuine hearts. After a series of setbacks and blows, a self-destructive Bud ends up in bed with Tinny’s classmate (played by Audrey Christie). Upon learning this news, Tinny suffers a mental breakdown.
