Xuanzang Sanzang is an abandoned child drifting in the river, raised by Master Sanzang of Jinshan Temple, and thus suffered discrimination from the monks in the temple. The murder of his master had a profound impact on his spirit, leading to an introverted and rebellious character. Sanzang is proud and unruly, seeking freedom and unwilling to be bound by anything. He wants to find absolute strength and power to protect what is important to him. His weapon is the Spirit Ascending Gun, with the ultimate skill being "Demon Ring Heavenly Cleansing." Sun Wukong, who always follows Sanzang, is an extraordinary being born from a stone 500 years ago, using the Ruyi Jingu Bang as his weapon, which matches his agility. He is extremely naive, his thought process simple and direct, mischievous and greedy for food, but when he removes the demon power control device from his forehead, he completely loses rationality, filled with a desire for destruction and slaughter, becoming an extremely dangerous character. The only person he is defenseless against and deeply relies on is Sanzang, as he is the "sunshine" that eases his century of loneliness. Zhu Bajie is a master of the Qi Kong Technique, with a gentle and amiable personality. Always smiling, he is meticulous in thought, considering issues in detail and comprehensively and can always see through others' thoughts. However, like Sanzang, Bajie is also human. Driven mad by revenge against the monster that tormented his beloved, he became a monster himself. The inescapable sin and punishment is an irreparable wound on his heart, and beneath that gentle smile lies a deep sadness yearning for relief. Sha Wujing, with red hair, is the child of a monster and a human, thus despised by his stepmother. His brother killed their mother to protect him, making him believe he is the true murderer, causing him deep guilt. Since then, Wujing has lived a dissolute life, becoming a lecherous and indiscreet libertine, yet he is still a generous man who fights against injustice. His weapon is a crescent-shaped shovel with chains, and although he often banters with Wukong, he genuinely cares for his companions. This group of uniquely characterized characters draws names from the classical Chinese masterpiece "Journey to the West," yet completely subverts the images in the original work. Although the story is set in ancient times, their language and behavior are no different from modern people, which gives the film a postmodern flavor. Each of the four, intertwined between human and demon, has their own inner wounds, and the delicate portrayal of their psychological journeys brings the audience into a world that is both poignant and filled with warmth.
