After the catastrophic event known as the "Second Impact" that struck the world, humanity rebuilds amidst the ruins. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is summoned to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 by his father, Gendo Ikari. Expecting a warm welcome from his father, he is instead met with giant beings known as "Angels" engaging in combat with the military. In this critical moment, Misato Katsuragi from the organization NERV saves Shinji and takes him to the NERV headquarters led by Gendo Ikari. However, Shinji is greeted by his father's cold command: to pilot a giant bio-mechanical robot known as "EVA" to fight the Angels.
After initially refusing, Shinji decides to obey his father's orders upon seeing the injured backup pilot, Rei Ayanami. Thus, with no combat training, Shinji prepares to pilot the EVA Unit-01 in battle against the Angels.
The fate of the world rests on the shoulders of this 14-year-old boy, while the "Human Instrumentality Project," hidden behind the "Second Impact," seems to be set in motion. Gendo Ikari, who holds all the answers, observes with a detached expression, as if everything has already been scripted.
