In the year 1999, an unknown giant "meteor" fell to Earth. Subsequent investigations revealed that it was actually an alien spaceship. Certain powerful nations formed a Unified Government to repair it and compensate for the environmental damage caused by its crash (while also covering up the fact of the alien ship's fall). The Earth Unified Forces transformed it into a super-large battleship measuring 1200 meters in length, named "Macross" (meaning "Great Universe" in German). During this time, humanity experienced a split between the pro-Unification and anti-Unification factions, while the modifications to the Macross continued amidst ongoing conflicts. Ten years later, on the day of Macross's formal launch ceremony, a massive time-space jump reaction was suddenly detected near the Moon's orbit. At that moment, the main cannon of the Macross inexplicably fired and hit an alien fleet observation ship that appeared on the Moon! This led to an urgent situation where engaging the enemy became a necessity... Therefore, the Unified Forces had to launch into combat and let the Macross take off to divert the enemy's attention. A young man named Hikaru Ichijo accidentally boarded a Unified Forces fighter and got caught up in the battle, saving a girl named Minmei, and developing a non-argumentative relationship with a female officer on board, Misa Hayase...
