High school student Natsume could have had an ordinary high school life, but he is able to see youkai, which causes him distress. Many times, he nearly lost his life due to these youkai. By chance, Natsume meets a cat deity who tells him that his grandmother Reiko had a "Book of Friends" recording the names of all the youkai she defeated. After Reiko's death, the youkai haunt Natsume in an attempt to reclaim their names. Only by returning the names to the youkai can Natsume restore his peaceful life. To return to a tranquil life, Natsume embarks on a journey with the cat deity, holding the "Book of Friends," which leads to a series of touching stories about youkai.
