13-year-old Amy (Anna Paquin) loses her mother in a car accident and is sent to live with her father (Jeff Daniels), who has been divorced from her mother for many years. Her father runs a farm and spends his days working on various quirky inventions, which leaves him unsure how to deal with the now-grown Amy. Their initial interactions are awkward and distant. As Amy copes with her mother's death and adapts to farm life, she discovers a nest of abandoned goose eggs in a thicket one day. She carefully brings them home and successfully hatches a brood of goslings, but due to government regulations against domesticating wild geese, Amy must return them to the wild. Her father comes up with a brilliant idea to help her; he builds a glider for her to help the goslings learn to fly, and then accompanies "Goose Mom" Amy as they lead the goslings on their journey to Lake Ontario during migration season. Throughout this process, the bond between father and daughter begins to strengthen...
