The story begins on a gambling ship in the dark of night… The protagonist, Kaiji Itou, is aimless and has achieved nothing, burdened with millions in debt after guaranteeing someone else’s loan out of kindness. To repay his debts, Kaiji is persuaded to board a ferry called the "Hope Ship" to participate in a mysterious gambling match, where winning means wiping out his debts. Once on the ship, Kaiji discovers that most participants are young people like himself who have failed in life. The organizers announce the rules of the game: participants must use playing cards marked with "Rock, Paper, Scissors" to seize star marks from their opponents; those who have not used all their cards or have fewer than three stars when the game ends will lose their qualification. The huge sums that participants can borrow from the organizers at the beginning also become crucial for their profit or survival…
