A young Viking named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) is the son of the tribe leader Stoick the Vast (voiced by Gerard Butler). He desperately wants to slay dragons like his father does—these dragons are the main enemies of the Vikings who tend their flocks. However, Hiccup only brings frustration to the tribe every time he participates in dragon-slaying battles. In a confrontation with dragons, Hiccup secretly injures a mysterious dragon known as the Night Fury with a dragon trap and, against the wishes of his tribe, sets it free, raises it, and even tames it, naming it Toothless. Hiccup's secret actions raise the suspicion of Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera), a girl training in dragon-fighting techniques. Astrid discovers Hiccup's secret but is awestruck by the incredible experience of flying with Toothless. Hiccup decides to reveal the truth to Stoick and the returning tribe members during the dragon-slaying rite of passage, hoping to convince everyone to abandon dragon slaying, but things backfire, resulting in Toothless being captured, and a greater disaster looms ahead...
