During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military drafted a large number of soldiers. Many young people enlisted and underwent "brutal" training at boot camp. "Dumb" Bill had underdeveloped motor skills and often made mistakes, causing everyone to suffer punishment together. "Joker" (played by Matthew Modine) was tasked with helping Bill, but Bill continued to mess up, affecting others. Frustrated, the group beat him up, and Bill became mentally unstable. On the eve of graduation from boot camp, he shot a drill instructor and then committed suicide with the gun. Later, "Joker" was assigned to the military news division. In interviews, he observed that his former comrades had become numb and cruel. During a mission with "Cowboy", they were ambushed by a Viet Cong sniper, resulting in Cowboy's unfortunate death. After a search, they managed to wound the sniper, and "Joker" discovered that the sniper was a young girl. Some suggested leaving her to struggle to death, but "Joker" pulled the trigger at her pleading words, "Kill me."
