The film tells the story of August 1945, when the U.S. military was about to attack the Japanese homeland. The I-77 submarine was ordered to set out as the final line of defense. Captain Kuramoto (played by Hiroshi Tamaki) refuses to use the human torpedo "Kaitei," a type of man-operated suicide torpedo. He has previously sunk several enemy ships using only regular torpedoes, instilling fear in the U.S. military. However, his friend Captain Aizawa's (played by Yoshikazu Douchin) submarine is sunk by the battle-hardened warrior, Captain Stewart's destroyer "Percival."
