Lieutenant Dunbar (played by Kevin Costner) achieved great merit during the Civil War, and in recognition, the government granted him the privilege to choose his own post. Dunbar yearns for a completely new life and thus selects the remote western outpost of Fort Sedgwick, which is home to a large population of Sioux Indians. Initially, the Sioux resist his arrival, but as Dunbar actively approaches and learns about their way of life, and rescues a white girl who was raised among the Sioux, their relationship begins to warm. He receives an Indian name: Dances with Wolves. Dunbar's horsemanship amazes the tribe, his kindness is praised by all, and he develops a romantic relationship with the white girl. During a battle against outside invaders, Dunbar is even proclaimed as a national hero by the Sioux. However, the decline of the horse culture becomes inevitable as white soldiers come to the land, driving out the Sioux and capturing the "traitor" Dunbar, slowly changing the face of this pristine land…
