On the eve of the liberation of Shanghai in 1949, Lu Jiaqi, the owner of the Huxin Textile Factory, discovered that his cousin Lu Jialiang was having an affair with his concubine Surong. Furious and incited by his first wife, Lu Jiaqi decided to leave Lu Jialiang in Shanghai to manage the family business while taking his entire family to Hong Kong, intending to use the Communist Party to eliminate his brother. Surong, who was already pregnant, resolutely chose to remain and share life and death with Lu Jialiang after realizing Lu Jiaqi's malicious intentions, which left Lu Jiaqi greatly shocked. Soon, Surong gave birth to a son named Lu Jianguo in mainland China. Coincidentally, on the same day in the same maternity ward, two other newborns were also born: one was the son of the PLA commander Gao Dajie, Gao Hongqi, who had stationed in Shanghai, and the other was the daughter of Lu Jiaqi's enemy, worker Hao Dage from Huxin, named Hao Aihua. Thus, the three children formed an unbreakable bond. Time passed, and Hao Aihua, now a young girl, fell in love with the honest and sincere Lu Jianguo. However, Gao Hongqi, the child of high-ranking officials, also fell for Hao Aihua. Naturally, Lu Jianguo, from a less privileged background, tried to withdraw from this love triangle, but his intellect and good looks not only captivated Hao Aihua but also attracted the admiration of his classmate, the daughter of a martyr, Zeng Kangmei. Zeng Kangmei's fervent pursuit of Lu Jianguo aroused jealousy in Zeng Kangmei's boyfriend, Zhao Dongfang. When the "Down to the Countryside Movement" began, Lu Jianguo, Gao Hongqi, Hao Aihua, Zeng Kangmei, and Zhao Dongfang all immersed themselves in this great tide. At this time, Hao Dage, now the director of the Huxin Revolutionary Committee, tried to prevent Hao Aihua from falling in love with Lu Jianguo by using his power to assign Lu Jianguo, Gao Hongqi, Zhao Dongfang, and Zeng Kangmei to remote rural areas in Guangxi while sending Hao Aihua alone to the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Deeply in love with Lu Jianguo, Hao Aihua broke away from her family and resolutely gave up her assignment to follow Lu Jianguo to Guangxi. In the materially and spiritually impoverished rural areas of Guangxi, the flower of love quietly blossomed. Lu Jianguo and Hao Aihua, this couple who had weathered hardships, finally came together. Zeng Kangmei and Gao Hongqi also found their own love—Zeng Kangmei accepted Zhao Dongfang's affection, while Gao Hongqi began a romance with the village Party secretary's daughter, Juxiang. However, the good times were short-lived. A year later, Hao Dage ordered Hao Aihua back to the city, and she and Lu Jianguo were again separated. Gao Dajie returned to a leadership position, and Hao Dage summoned Gao Hongqi back to the city, aiming to arrange a marriage between Gao Hongqi and Hao Aihua to achieve a "political marriage." After returning to the city, Gao Hongqi learned that Juxiang was pregnant with his child. The village cadre Li Xingfu, who had unsuccessfully pursued Juxiang, retaliated against her because of this. In order to protect Juxiang, Lu Jianguo voluntarily acknowledged that the child was his and married Juxiang, naming their son Lu Zhiqing. Lu Jianguo, Zeng Kangmei, and Zhao Dongfang formed an alliance pledging to never reveal this matter to Gao Hongqi and Hao Aihua. Unaware of the truth, Hao Aihua was devastated when she learned of Lu Jianguo's marriage and, out of spite, married Gao Hongqi. Relying on his family's connections, Gao Hongqi quickly rose to become the deputy factory director of Huxin and head of the Textile Bureau. Not long after, Zeng Kangmei and Zhao Dongfang returned to the city one after another. Lu Jianguo continued to stay in rural Guangxi, living with Juxiang and their son. Surong fell ill and on her deathbed entrusted Lu Jianguo's nanny, Jin Feng, to take care of him. Jin Feng traveled to rural Guangxi to persuade Lu Jianguo to return to the city, but he refused. Following the large wave of return to the city, unwilling to burden Lu Jianguo, Juxiang proactively dissolved their marriage. Only then did Lu Jianguo embark on his journey back to the city and became an ordinary worker at Huxin. Juxiang, as a single mother, faced very difficult living conditions. To ensure Juxiang and Zhiqing could have a good life, Lu Jianguo took on a second job, which earned him strict criticism from factory director Gao Hongqi. Zeng Kangmei stood up for Lu Jianguo, revealing Zhiqing's true origin to Gao Hongqi. Gao Hongqi was shocked but, to protect his political future, insisted that Lu Jianguo and Zeng Kangmei keep the secret, and he agreed not to stop Lu Jianguo from pursuing his second job. Soon, Lu Jianguo was sentenced to three years in prison for speculation and malpractices. During his imprisonment, Gao Hongqi took on the responsibility of sending money to Juxiang and her child. Juxiang, unwilling to increase Lu Jianguo's burden, married a mute man from the village and returned all the money sent by Gao Hongqi on Lu Jianguo's behalf. After serving his sentence, Lu Jianguo sought employment in various places but was rejected due to his criminal record. Just when he was at a dead end, Lu Jiaqi passed away in Hong Kong, leaving a will for Lu Jianguo to inherit his estate. Lu Jun, the son of the first wife, sought to monopolize the inheritance by claiming Lu Jianguo was not Lu Jiaqi's biological son, and he took Lu Jianguo to court to try to deny his inheritance rights. A paternity test confirmed that Lu Jianguo was indeed Lu Jiaqi's biological son, while Lu Jun was not Lu Jiaqi's son. Lu Jianguo thus inherited the family business and became the president of the Xinxin Group. In order to enable Zhiqing to go to school and attend university, Juxiang traveled far to the county town to work, taking a temporary job at a quartz sand factory. A year later, Juxiang fainted at work and was diagnosed with stage two pneumoconiosis, forcing her to return home. When the mute man learned that Juxiang needed a lot of money for lung treatment, he went to a small coal mine to dig coal but unfortunately lost his life in the mine. Stricken with illness, Juxiang had to rely on making chrysanthemum tea to get by. Lu Jianguo entrusted the management of Xinxin Group to his sister Lu Ying and returned to Shanghai, opening a real estate company together with Pan Feng, whom he met in Macau. The avant-garde and rebellious Gao Hongqi fell deeply in love with his boss, Lu Jianguo, who was also the first love of her mother, Hao Aihua, leading to a family scandal. To fulfill her father's last wish, Lu Ying came to Shanghai and planned to spend heavily to acquire the heavily indebted Huxin, but the acquisition faced strong opposition from old employees like Hao Dage and Gao Dajie. Lu Jianguo worked hard to mediate for the future of Huxin and the workers' interests, and both parties eventually reached a joint venture agreement. Juxiang's illness worsened, and she ultimately passed away. Lu Jianguo, Gao Hongqi, and all the educated youth reunited in rural Guangxi, where the truth of the educated youth's origins was unveiled, and Hao Aihua finally understood the real reason Lu Jianguo had abandoned her to marry Juxiang. Three months later, the "Shanghai Republic Textile Co., Ltd." was officially established. At the company's founding meeting, Hao Aihua received Lu Jianguo's resignation letter. It turned out that Lu Jianguo had opened a travel company and was currently leading a group of tourists on a "dream-seeking journey" to Guangxi...
