The September 18 Incident led to the fall of Northeast China. Bi Lian's father, Zhao Yisheng, along with Bai Qianshan and teacher Jiang Feng, actively organized anti-Japanese armed actions, helping local resistance forces to blow up the Japanese-controlled Manchurian Railway. As a result, Bi Lian's family was brutally massacred by the Japanese army, and her father was killed. During their escape, Bi Lian and her sister Bi He were separated, with Bi He falling into the hands of bandits, only to be rescued later by the anti-Japanese hero Hong Fei. Bi Lian and her classmate Bai Lan enrolled in the Nanjing Army Academy to join the fight to save the nation.
