During the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, there was an antique shop in Tianjin called Hengyazhai. The owner, Zhao Rugui (played by Wang Gang), was a legendary figure—smart and shrewd, yet loyal and righteous. His profound knowledge of jade appraisal was highly regarded in the industry, earning the admiration of the then-already-abdicated Emperor Puyi. At a time when the survival of the Chinese nation was at stake, Japanese invaders drove deep into the country, scheming to achieve their ambition of dominating China through Puyi. Zhao's eldest son-in-law, Lu Xiongfei (played by Ding Haifeng), was the head of the Green Gang, and out of greed, he was willing to collaborate with the Japanese to smuggle national treasures of jade. Zhao's second daughter, Huaiyu (played by Shen Aojun), was a passionate patriot and was vehemently opposed to the Japanese invaders. On the other hand, Zhao Rugui obtained a jade masterpiece, the Wangtianhou, from the eunuch Liu Baoxun. To protect it from falling into the hands of the invaders, Zhao faced a painful and significant choice… This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhou Zhentian.
