In 1942, the main force of the 14th Brigade of the New Fourth Army's 5th Division crossed the Yangtze River to establish an anti-Japanese base in southern Hubei centered around Mount Damu. In early August 1945, on the day of the grand wedding between Feng Li, son of the president of the Xiangmu Town Maintenance Association, and Xu Lingshan, daughter of Xu Tianming, a Japanese soldier kicked a Chinese child to death.
