"The Anti-bandit Chronicles of Western Sichuan" tells the story of a young man, Zhou Zhibin, and a woman from a traveling theater troupe, Dan Feng, whose fateful love and hatred unfold amid the dawn of the new China in the haunted atmosphere of the Two Rivers Mouth fortress in Western Sichuan. The passionate youth Zhou Zhibin falls in love with the leading actress Dan Feng after a knife-throwing encounter on the Wannian platform. A ban on opium by the new county magistrate sent by the National Government plunges Two Rivers Mouth into a bloody struggle for control of the opium trade.
