"The Anti-bandit Chronicles of Western Sichuan" tells the story of a young man, Zhou Zhibin, and a woman from a traveling theater troupe, Dan Feng, whose fateful love and hatred unfold amid the dawn of the new China in the haunted atmosphere of the Two Rivers Mouth fortress in Western Sichuan.
The passionate youth Zhou Zhibin falls in love with the leading actress Dan Feng after a knife-throwing encounter on the Wannian platform. However, he soon discovers that his father, Zhou Wenxuan, also admires Dan Feng for her courage and chivalry. A ban on opium by the new county magistrate sent by the National Government plunges Two Rivers Mouth into a bloody struggle for control of the opium trade. Zhou Zhibin forms a brotherhood with Zhang Jibang, the town mayor's son, and Huang Dengbao, an orphan from Two Rivers, vowing to defend their home at all costs. To rescue Dan Feng, they attempt several dangerous infiltrations into the bandit's lair, only to be captured by the notorious bandit Golden Diamond. In an ironic twist, Huang Dengbao joins Golden Diamond's gang and becomes a formidable warrior under his command. Zhang Jibang, framed by villains, is secretly sent to a military academy in the provincial capital by the forward-thinking magistrate, Ma Yuzhi. Meanwhile, Zhou Zhibin is crippled while saving Dan Feng by Golden Diamond. To ensure Zhou Zhibin's survival, Dan Feng reluctantly agrees to marry Zhou Wenxuan as a secondary wife. After an extravagant wedding banquet, the former lovers become a second wife and stepson...
Zhou Wenxuan is murdered due to collusion between corrupt officials and bandits, leading to Zhou Zhibin and Dan Feng being vilified by society. Remembering Zhou Wenxuan’s last wishes, Dan Feng supports the entire Zhou family in her role as "second wife." Unable to bear the disgrace of the Zhou family's fall from grace, Zhou Zhibin leaves Two Rivers Mouth to seek refuge with Zhang Jibang in the provincial capital. Burdened with guilt over his father's death, Zhou Zhibin falls into Golden Diamond's trap and becomes addicted to opium. With no money to pay for his habits, he is beaten up and sent back to Two Rivers Mouth. The opportunistic villain Li Yaowu uses the opportunity to tie up Zhou Zhibin in front of the townspeople, denigrating him as "a dog." Dan Feng exchanges the family's property deeds and all her wealth to save Zhou Zhibin’s life, while she herself moves into a dilapidated thatched hut with the ancestral tablets of the Zhou family. After finally arriving at the military academy in the provincial capital, Zhou Zhibin learns that Zhang Jibang and the magistrate's daughter, Ma Juhua, have been executed as Communists... Jiang Weishu, who has fallen to the status of a beggar, is rescued by Zhou Zhibin and taken to Dan Feng’s thatched hut. Seeing everything before him, Zhou Zhibin finally realizes his responsibilities to the Zhou family and the second wife. Determined to avenge his father, Zhou Zhibin embarks on a killing spree. Dan Feng, unable to bear watching Zhou Zhibin become a monster due to the harsh realities of life, helps him kick his opium habit with maternal love and encourages him to marry Jiang Weishu, who is pregnant with Zhang Jibang’s child, hoping to restore warmth to his home. Huang Dengbao harbors deep resentment against Golden Diamond for killing his wife, Miss Xu. During the celebratory wedding banquet of Zhou Zhibin and Jiang Weishu, old scores are settled as they join forces to kill Golden Diamond. Weishu, feeling betrayed, is filled with worry about her future life. Zhou Zhibin ultimately rises to become the mayor of Two Rivers Mouth, and Huang Dengbao becomes the largest bandit leader on the opium route...
News of the Communist Party's crackdown on opium and bandits reaches Two Rivers Mouth. Huang Dengbao, with the backing of the powerful Lin Siye, leaves to join the Whampoa Military Academy. Zhou Zhibin uncovers the mystery of his son Zhou Wei’s origins, leading to his furious reprimand of Dan Feng and Weishu for their concealment. Dan Feng realizes that Zhou Wei represents a divide between Zhou Zhibin and Weishu, and she decides to secretly take Zhou Wei away, allowing Zhou Zhibin and Weishu to lead a happy life. Encouraged by Weishu, Dan Feng ultimately leaves the Zhou family on her own. Zhou Zhibin, touched by the second wife’s selflessness, accepts Zhou Wei and lives a simple and peaceful life with Weishu. With the help of Commander Gu Yi and Ma Juhua, Zhang Jibang rapidly advances to become a company commander in the People's Liberation Army. When the "dead" Jibang returns as a company commander while Dengbao becomes an envoy of the reactionary KMT, the two lead their respective forces back to Two Rivers Mouth, leaving Zhou Zhibin confused and lost. After hearing that Two Rivers Mouth is unstable, Dan Feng, now living in seclusion, returns with her adopted son, Water Buffalo. The ignorant Zhou Zhibin fears that Zhang Jibang's "resurrection" will take away Weishu and Zhou Wei, and that the Communist Party's policy of "sharing husbands" will leave him with nothing again. Thus, he refuses to cooperate with the Communists and staunchly denies entry to the PLA in Two Rivers Mouth. At the behest of Lin Siye, Huang Dengbao uses Zhou Zhibin's worry about Zhang Jibang to sow discord, creating a rift between Zhou Zhibin and Zhang Jibang. To bridge Zhou Zhibin's heart, Zhang Jibang marries Ma Juhua, who has developed revolutionary feelings for him over the years.
Upon discovering that her long-lost relatives are Dengbao's family, Dan Feng discerns right from wrong and realizes that only the PLA can restore peace to the world. With the support and assistance of Dan Feng and Jibang, Zhou Zhibin ultimately transforms his humanity and stands on the side of justice. As Huang Dengbao spirals deeper into darkness, he resorts to blackmailing Zhou Zhibin and Zhang Jibang with the lives of Dan Feng and Weishu. In a moment of crisis, Dan Feng detonates the explosives strapped to her body, blasting a path for the PLA into Two Rivers Mouth, using her most precious life to sing a final dirge. After experiencing life's twists and turns, the ups and downs of humanity, love, and resentment, Zhou Zhibin ultimately chooses to join Zhang Jibang, Jiang Weishu, Zhou Wei, and others in celebrating the victory of the new China.
