In the early 1970s, on a mesmerizing night illuminated by moonlight, a young female intellectual, Mei Jie, in a riverside village on the outskirts of the city, kills the production team leader after being raped. Xiaoyu, a fellow intellectual who witnesses the rape and the murder, suffers mental breakdown from shock. Due to a series of misunderstandings, the simple villager Yang Shoufu, who happened to pass by the scene while drunk, is wrongfully suspected of negligent homicide and is confusedly sentenced to life imprisonment by a law student, Su Tianlei, who is trying a case for the first time. Thirty years have passed. The accomplished lawyer Su Tianlei faces a challenge from the young attorney Lin Anning, leading to frequent verbal clashes that leave them unable to coexist. The criminal Yang Shoufu, having achieved a great feat while imprisoned, is released with a reduced sentence. Following his wife's last words, he embarks on a lonely and tragic journey to seek justice. Mei Jie has become the chairwoman of the soon-to-be-listed Jingwei Group and also serves as the president of a charity association, frequently visiting a welfare house just to be close to her daughter, Dang Congrong, who was born after she was raped thirty years ago. The intelligent and introverted doctoral student, Dang Congrong, is studying under her supervisor, Hua Rengang, who is Mei Jie’s husband. The slain Captain Ye's son, Ye Zongping, graduates successfully and goes to Shenzhen to start a business. He later sells all his assets and returns home with a secret dream and ambition. Su Tianlei's son, Su Xiaomin, eager to get rich quickly, becomes Ye Zongping's assistant, following his every step. They establish a critical business relationship with Mei Jie’s Jingwei Group. Yang Shoufu faces numerous obstacles in his quest for justice, eventually getting involved with the legal reporter of a newspaper, Hua Hua, the daughter of Mei Jie and Hua Rengang. Driven by a sense of justice and sympathy, Hua Hua introduces Yang Shoufu to her boyfriend, lawyer Lin Anning. Thus, a multitude of relationships—wives, lovers, rivals, teachers and students, masters and servants, the actual murderer and the scapegoat, witnesses and benefactors, lawyers and clients, business partners and opponents, voyeurs and concealers—become tightly intertwined through the story of a "retrial of a wrongful conviction," showcasing the warmth and cruelty of human nature, the light and darkness of the soul, the complexity of justice and conscience, the precision and seriousness of the law, and the destruction caused by distorted souls. Through a complex and arduous journey of exoneration, through the harsh baptism of blood and fire, people eventually realize the true value of life and humanity.
