In the Shanghai concession, overshadowed by the Sino-Japanese War, life goes on with singing and dancing, indulgence and luxury, becoming the only island that hasn't sunk. Early in the morning, private detective Wu Fei is disturbed by Chief Detective Chen Shu from the law enforcement, who informs him that the dancer Jasmine has been murdered.
