In the twelfth year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty, the Prince of Pingxi, Wu Sangui, was garrisoned in the Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, mustering troops and preparing to rebel against the Qing court. Kangxi issued an imperial edict summoning Wu Sangui to the capital and dispatched a special envoy to Kunming to visit the Prince of Pingxi's residence…
Under the beautiful Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake in Dali, Yunnan, while the Bai people were singing and laughing under the Chongsheng Three Pagodas, a group of soldiers under Wu Sangui began to forcibly conscript laborers. With the help of a young hero in white and a heroic maiden in red, the soldiers tactfully retreated. From this moment on, Bai Jianqing and Ning Ning formed an unbreakable bond… Ning Ning, with her extraordinary martial arts skills and ability to appear and disappear at will, joined Bai Jianqing in battling soldiers and causing chaos in the bandit encampment, rescuing Bai Jianqing from prison, and even meeting Chen Yuanyuan… Bai Jianqing became infatuated with the mysterious heroine Ning Ning, and by Cangshan and Erhai, they shared an extraordinary fate together.
Although he dominated Yunnan and Guizhou, Wu Sangui was not popular among the locals. He faced suspicions from Emperor Kangxi above and threats from the scattered remnants of the former Ming army and rebellious warlords below. Being astute, he guarded against dangers at every turn.
Before raising the banner of revolt, Wu Sangui, with his wife Chen Yuanyuan and daughter Wu Qi, disguised themselves and traveled to Dali. On one hand, they toured local scenic spots, and on the other hand, they aimed to conspire with the former Ming general Jin Ruyi to plot against the Qing dynasty. Disguised as a wandering hero, Bai Jianqing came to Dali under a secret imperial order to assassinate Wu Sangui. Taking advantage of the unpreparedness of Wu and Jin, Bai Jianqing teamed up with local bandit leader Ma Biaodeng and others to attempt the assassination, but faced continuous failures. Just as he was about to deliver a final blow to Wu Sangui, Ning Ning saved Wu Sangui. As she unveiled her red veil, it turned out that the heroine Ning Ning was actually Wu Sangui's youngest daughter, Wu Qi!
It turned out that although Chen Yuanyuan and Wu Qi were Wu Sangui's most cherished family members, they opposed his plan to rebel against heaven and disregard the lives of the people. After repeated unsuccessful attempts to persuade him, Wu Qi and her mother believed that perhaps their plea could awaken Wu Sangui amidst the public outcry. Thus, scenes of failed assassinations and covert protections unfolded.
In the end, under the heartfelt persuasion of his family and the outcry of the people, Wu Sangui abandoned his aspiration to become a king against the will of the populace.
