A famous documentary by director Ken Burns, The Vietnam War aired on PBS in the United States in 2017 and consists of 10 episodes with a total duration of 18 hours. It features interviews with nearly 80 witnesses from all sides, including both pro-war and anti-war Americans, as well as soldiers and civilians from South and North Vietnam. The film took ten years to produce and involved extensive global research, incorporating many rare and newly digitized visual archives, alongside some of the most famous photographs, home movies, historical news footage, and internal government recordings of the 20th century. With PBS releasing the documentary The Vietnam War, we are given a chance to reflect on that divisive era. For those who lived through it, that period will forever be etched in their minds. President Johnson awarded a Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant First Class in Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam. From 1962 to 1971, the U.S. military sprayed chemical agents—defoliants—over the forests of Vietnam to strip the lush trees bare, removing the natural cover for North Vietnamese troops. The defoliants had devastating effects on the environment, endangering the entire ecosystem due to large-scale vegetation destruction, and their teratogenic properties severely impacted human health.
