Why do we buy things? Who has made this world of unrestrained consumption? How do they do it? Investigative journalist Jacques Peretti examines the mechanisms behind the trend of unrestrained consumption and finds the answer. It turns out that the culprits behind making this world of unrestrained consumption are not the advertisers and marketers as commonly believed, but rather those who first change products and then change us. The documentary shows that manufacturers have long dreamed of implanting the concept of "upgrade" in consumers' minds, making unlimited consumption a reality. They initially targeted the undeveloped children’s market, learning to apply methods to sell to children, thus increasing sales to adults. However, the biggest cash cow comes from fear—by tapping into consumer fears, manufacturers discovered a vast world of demand for health and safety products.
