The famous documentary director Ken Burns' documentary on the Vietnam War aired on PBS in the U.S. in 2017, consisting of 10 episodes with a total runtime of 18 hours. It features nearly 80 interviewees from various sides, including both pro-war and anti-war Americans, as well as military and civilians from South and North Vietnam. This film took ten years to produce, gathering materials from around the world, including many rare and newly digitized archival footage, some of the most famous photographs from the 20th century, home movies, historical news clips, and secret recordings from government insiders. With PBS's release of the documentary "The Vietnam War," we are able to reflect on that divisive era. For those who lived through that time, this period will forever be engraved in their memories. President Johnson awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to South Vietnamese Lieutenant at Cam Ranh Bay. From 1962 to 1971, the U.S. military sprayed chemical agents—defoliants—over the forests of Vietnam to strip the lush trees bare, thus depriving North Vietnamese troops of natural cover. The defoliants had severe environmental consequences, threatening the entire ecosystem of the region due to large-scale vegetation destruction and causing serious health impacts on humans because of the teratogenic effects of these pesticides.
