Why do we buy things? Who has made this world of unrestrained consumption? How did they do it? Investigative journalist Jacques Peretti examines the mechanisms behind the trend of unrestrained consumption and comes to a conclusion. It turns out that the real culprit behind unrestrained consumption is not the advertisers and marketers that people commonly believe, but rather those who, behind many factors, first change the products and then change us. The documentary reveals that manufacturers have long dreamed of implanting the concept of "upgrade" in consumers' minds, making infinite consumption a reality. They initially targeted the untapped children's market, learning and applying methods to sell to children in order to boost sales to adults. However, the biggest cash cow comes from fear—by tapping into consumers' fears, manufacturers discovered a world with a massive demand for health and safety products.
