This ten-part high-definition documentary, produced for the History Channel by award-winning director, writer, and producer Frederic Lumiere, tells the story of World War II through the eyes of a group of people who encountered it, using high-definition color footage derived from thousands of hours of archival and shooting material, never-before-published diaries, and audio recordings from the Library of Congress. The greatest conflict between civilizations has been mentioned countless times. Images like a Frenchman crying as German soldiers march beneath the Arc de Triomphe, American forces raising the flag on Mount Suribachi, and the mushroom cloud rising over Hiroshima are all familiar scenes. The History Channel recreated this historical moment with the latest technology and its own style (released in the fall of 2009), for which audiences have waited half a century. Utilizing HD full-color imagery, 1500 hours of restored archival material, new footage, previously unpublished diaries and records, as well as audio materials from the Library of Congress, the History Channel opened a unique window for viewers to understand this war, allowing them to examine it through the eyes of those who encountered it during World War II. No television program in history or on the History Channel has ever so vividly captured the ultimate horrors, indomitable spirit, mundane trivialities, and supreme glory of this world-changing war. This is the most ambitious documentary to date by the History Channel, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the History Channel claims it will be "breathtaking." As the producer and director of this documentary, I have been incredibly busy. Staying in the studio to work on this project alone would not achieve the History Channel's goals. I had to travel to Normandy, New York, and even more places. Because of time zone differences and the vast distances involved, this project required a controlled workflow. WWII in HD was produced and directed by award-winning director and editor Frederic Lumiere, a recognized leader in high-definition production and post-production. Lumiere, who has worked on projects like The Magic of Fatima, has advanced the development of RED digital cameras and founded Lumiere HD. WWII in HD was produced in collaboration with Lou Reda Productions and Lou Reda, with Scott Reda as executive producer and Liz Reph and Frederic Lumiere as producers.
