On November 13, 2007, with the promotion of the Hongdao Elder Welfare Foundation, 17 seniors with an average age of 81 began a 13-day motorcycle journey around Taiwan. They set off from Taichung, traveling south through Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Yilan, and Taipei, before returning to Taichung, covering a total distance of 1,178 kilometers! Among the 17 seniors, two had previously battled cancer, four required hearing aids, and five suffered from high blood pressure. They traversed the treacherous Suhua Highway and experienced the group leader being hospitalized three times, but they each overcame their challenges, completing what outsiders considered an "impossible dream" with fearless hearts and passionate actions. The life experiences of the 17 elders varied greatly; some were native to Taiwan, while others came with the Kuomintang army. They held professions such as police officer, veteran, pastor, calligraphy teacher, and barber. Interestingly, some grandfathers from other provinces could not speak Taiwanese but communicated with local companions in heavily accented versions of each other’s languages, creating a humorous scene. After the 13-day journey around the island, 16 grandfathers and 1 grandmother, who started as strangers, developed feelings akin to family, all expressing that they felt younger and more vibrant!
