Episode 1: Breaking the IceThe film opens with Jonathan Dimbleby driving on the tundra within the Arctic Circle. It is currently the season of the midnight sun during Russia's brief summer, with ice and snow melting, and the sun never setting. Now, before Jonathan Dimbleby lies a challenging journey of ten thousand miles through a country that is not only the largest in the world but perhaps also the most awe-inspiring.Episode 2: Two WorldsToday, if the vitality of Russia is in its cities, then the country’s eternal spirit lies in the countryside. At the beginning of this episode, Jonathan Dimbleby attends a reception for a Madonna concert, open to anyone in Moscow, including a high-end restaurant owner, Arkady Novikov. The next day, Jonathan takes a train to a completely different world: the estate of Leo Tolstoy, arguably Russia's greatest writer.Episode 3: MotherlandThe Volga River symbolizes the patriotism of the Russian people; it flows through Moscow, through the heart of Russia, and eventually empties into the Caspian Sea. Several significant battles and transformations have occurred along its banks. Not far from the port of Astrakhan, there is a small village that was once the capital of the Golden Horde. Jonathan arrives there in the bone-chilling month of February and is astonished to discover that the vast empire of Genghis Khan has left no trace.Episode 4: National TreasuresSiberia is Russia's treasure. As early as the 16th century, the first adventurers, the Cossacks, crossed the Ural Mountains to engage in the fur trade, but soon after, other lucrative businesses emerged. Jonathan begins his journey at a emerald mine, then moves on to Yekaterinburg—a city built to protect and develop the iron ore reserves in the mountains. Its heavy industry produced a large number of tanks and military equipment for the Soviet government and gave rise to a heavy metal music tradition.Episode 5: Far From MoscowThis day was a warm one by Siberian standards, at a mere minus 18 degrees. When Jonathan meets a Buryat monk near the shores of Lake Baikal, Valentin Khagdaev takes him to a tree standing in the fields. This tree has grown out of the stones.
