A true crime documentary produced by Netflix based on real events, depicting the sensational 2001 case of novelist Michael Peterson accused of murdering his wife. In 2001, crime novelist Michael Peterson's wife, Kathleen, was found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their home. Michael immediately called the police upon seeing the situation. However, authorities discovered that Kathleen's injuries did not correspond with a fall down the stairs, and Michael was the only person home at the time. Additionally, prosecutors found that 20 years earlier, Peterson had attended the funeral of a family friend whose cause of death was similar to Kathleen's, also occurring at the bottom of the stairs. Thus, Michael Peterson was charged with the murder of Kathleen. The "novelist kills wife" case stirred significant public attention. In 2003, Michael Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, but the trial was highly controversial. Later, the case was retried, revealing increasingly complex evidence.
