On November 13, 2007, under the initiative of the Hongdao Elderly Welfare Foundation, 17 elders with an average age of 81 embarked on a 13-day motorcycle journey around the island. They started from Taichung, heading south through Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Yilan, Taipei, and back to Taichung, covering a total distance of 1178 kilometers! Among the 17 elders, two had previously suffered from cancer, four required hearing aids, and five had high blood pressure. They faced the treacherous Suhua Highway, and the team leader had to go in and out of the hospital three times, but they all overcame difficulties. With fearless hearts and passionate actions, they accomplished what outsiders considered an "impossible dream." The life stories of the 17 elders are diverse; some are from native Taiwan, while others came to Taiwan with the Kuomintang army. Their professions include police officers, veterans, pastors, calligraphy teachers, and barbers. Interestingly, some grandfathers from other provinces could not speak Taiwanese, but to communicate with their local companions, they spoke each other's languages with heavy accents, creating quite a funny scene. After the 13-day journey around the island, 16 grandfathers and 1 grandmother developed feelings akin to family, and they all unanimously expressed that they felt younger and more energetic!
