"My Mother's Disappearance" is a radical documentary born from a series of confrontations between a mother longing to liberate herself and a son eager to use the medium of film to maintain an intimate relationship with her. Bene-detta Barzini, a respected Italian model, broke conventions by becoming a journalist and professor and became notorious for publicly criticizing the deep-seated disdain in the fashion industry. However, now in her 70s, Barzini's disdain for the world of images has deepened into an existential crisis. Quietly and without warning, she packs her bags and tells her son Beniamino that she intends to disappear from the material world forever. Terrified, Beniamino devises a plan that he hopes will allow her to confront – rather than flee from – what she trusts the least: the camera. By filming her, he intends to rescue his mother's true essence and preserve her narrative.
