Episode 1: Breaking the Ice The film opens with Jonathan Dimbleby driving across the tundra in the Arctic Circle. It is the season of the midnight sun during Russia's brief summer, where the ice and snow are melting, and the sun never sets. Now, Jonathan Dimbleby faces a grueling journey of ten thousand miles, traversing a country that is not only the largest in the world but possibly also the most awe-inspiring. Episode 2: Two Worlds Today, if the vitality of Russia is found in its cities, then the eternal spirit of the country resides in its countryside. At the beginning of this episode, Jonathan Dimbleby attends a reception for a Madonna concert, open to anyone from Moscow, including a high-end restaurant owner, Arkady Novikov. The next day, Jonathan takes a train to a vastly different world: the home of Leo Tolstoy, arguably one of Russia's greatest writers. Episode 3: Motherland The Volga River symbolizes the patriotic sentiment of the Russians. It flows through Moscow, through the heart of the country, and finally into the Caspian Sea. Numerous significant struggles and transformations have occurred along its banks. Not far from the port of Astrakhan lies a small village that once served as the capital of the Golden Horde. Jonathan arrives there in the bone-chilling February and is surprised to find that the vast empire of Genghis Khan has vanished without a trace. Episode 4: National Treasures Siberia is Russia's treasure. As early as the 16th century, the first adventurous Cossacks crossed the Ural Mountains to engage in the fur trade, but soon other lucrative businesses emerged. Jonathan begins his journey at an emerald mine before arriving in Yekaterinburg, a city built to protect and develop the iron ore reserves in the mountains. Its heavy industry produced large numbers of tanks and armaments for the Soviet government and gave birth to a tradition of heavy metal music. Episode 5: Away from Moscow On this day, it is a warm day by Siberian standards, just minus 18 degrees. When Jonathan meets a Buryat monk near the shores of Lake Baikal, Valentin Khagdaev takes Jonathan to a tree in the wilderness. This tree seems to have grown out of a rock.
