What impact does wealth inequality have on society? Can the poor truly take control of their future? The international nonprofit organization STEPS INTERNATIONAL promotes the cross-media project "Why Poverty?", collaborating on the production and globally broadcasting a series of documentaries that explore the issue of poverty in the 21st century. "Why Poverty?" is a non-commercial initiative led by the international nonprofit organization STEPS INTERNATIONAL based in Denmark. STEPS previously initiated "Why Democracy?" in 2007. Building on this foundation, "Why Poverty?" aims to stimulate public discussion on poverty through film; the plan's co-founders include the BBC and DR, both of which are major partners and promoters of this initiative. The project invites documentary filmmakers from around the world to create eight one-hour documentaries centered around the theme of "Why Poverty?", encouraging a global dialogue on poverty issues and examining the past and future of the one billion people living in extreme poverty. This series premiered globally in November 2012, with over 70 broadcasters, including Taiwan's PTS, the UK's BBC, America's PBS, Japan's NHK, and Hong Kong's RTHK, participating in the joint broadcast, reaching an estimated audience of over 500 million people.
