Amy (Naomi Watts) and Peter (Tim Roth) are a wealthy and kind middle-class couple. Ten years ago, they adopted a boy named Lus (Kelvin Harrison) from Eritrea, a war-torn country in Africa. Lus had undergone very harsh military training as a child soldier, and Amy and Peter firmly believe that a good education and inclusive love can help him reconnect with his kind nature. Ten years have passed in the blink of an eye, and Lus has grown into an upright and promising young man, the scars of his past have faded significantly. Lus's African American teacher, Harriett (Octavia Spencer), greatly admires him and believes he can change people's stereotypical perceptions of African countries and ethnicities.
