In order to fulfill his father's wish, Viktor (played by Tom Hanks) travels from his homeland to Kennedy Airport in the United States. However, a dramatic turn of events occurs: he is informed that a coup has taken place in his country, rendering his identification and passport invalid, and his visa can no longer be used. Left in a difficult position, Viktor is forced to stay at the airport while waiting for new documents to be processed. For nine months, he waits at the airport. During this time, he washes up in the airport restrooms, sleeps in the waiting area, and learns to adapt to his surroundings by managing his life in the airport. He even finds a job at a construction site. However, Viktor's untidiness irritates the airport manager Frank (played by Stanley Tucci), and perhaps more frustrating for him is that the beautiful flight attendant Amelia (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) ends up falling in love with Viktor. While in a sweet romance, Viktor gradually observes the diverse lives within the airport, enjoying his situation.
