In July 1947, the Liberation War reached an important turning point. To restrain the enemy in North China from reinforcing Northeast China, the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China decided to form the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Field Army and appointed Yang Dezhi as its commander. By October, Yang Dezhi led his troops to approach Xushui and began to surround the city. In Yang Dezhi's strategic intent, the siege of Xushui was a ruse to draw out the Nationalist Party's elite Third Army stationed in Shijiazhuang, subsequently annihilating it as the real objective. Given the distance between Xushui and Shijiazhuang, with Baoding in between, Yang Dezhi issued orders to intensify the attack and draw out the Nationalist general Luo Lirong.
The defenses of Xushui were strong, with solid fortifications and a complex situation inside the city. To effectively annihilate the defending forces, Yang Dezhi enlisted the famous female commando team leader Ma Qiufeng, along with the special operations company commander Cao Erniu, appointing their units as the vanguard for the siege. It was ironic; six years prior, Ma Qiufeng and Cao Erniu had been married in a flower hall, but due to Cao Erniu’s fear of Ma Qiufeng, their romance never blossomed into a happy marriage.
Under our powerful offensive, Xushui was quickly breached. With Xushui in crisis, Luo Lirong, stationed in Shijiazhuang, finally, after repeated urging from Commander Sun Lianzhong, led over 17,000 troops from two divisions and a regiment to advance toward Xushui. Luo Lirong was not a fool; he had already guessed Yang Dezhi's intention of "besieging the city to aid." Therefore, when his troops entered the newly liberated area of Xinle, Luo Lirong set up camp and remained inactive, choosing disobedience and risk of job loss over the loss of his position and city.
Luo Lirong's inaction surprised Yang Dezhi at first, but at that moment, a telegram from Chairman Jiang proved to be a great help for Yang Dezhi. With the "Principal's" order, Luo Lirong, knowing the dangers ahead, had no choice but to push on toward Xushui. To prevent the garrison in Baoding from providing assistance, Yang Dezhi broke convention by setting the battlefield at Qingfengdian, over 200 miles from Xushui. Under Yang Dezhi's orders, his troops completed what Luo Lirong could never have imagined as a strategic deployment within just 24 hours.
As night fell, all of Luo Lirong's troops were enveloped in the encirclement. The battle began, and Luo Lirong, caught off guard, suffered heavy casualties. By the time he partially understood the situation and attempted a counter-encirclement, Yang Dezhi's even more powerful offensive suppressed Luo Lirong's morale. After a night of panic, Luo Lirong finally awaited air support from Sun Lianzhong, but, lacking coordination with ground forces, he was left in a state of disarray and was ultimately captured by the female commando unit while trying to disguise himself and escape. Thus, the Battle of Qingfengdian lasted for thirty hours, completely annihilating over 20,000 troops of the Nationalist Party's Third Army, creating a successful example of the PLA’s long-distance mobile warfare on the plains.
