The three brothers, Harry, Doug (played by Frank Langella), and Modi, each hold one-third of a treasure map active in the Caribbean. Doug seeks to monopolize the treasure and mortally wounds Harry. Harry's daughter, Morgan (played by Geena Davis), takes over the pirate ship Morning Star, inheriting her father's wish for revenge and treasure hunting. Morgan removes the treasure map from her father's scalp but is unable to decipher the Latin on it and seeks help on land. Coincidentally, the habitual thief, Shaw (played by Matthew Modine), is being sold into slavery by the authorities. Morgan relies on Shaw's translation skills and buys him, soon showcasing her fierce nature while being pursued by the official army. Morgan and her companions find Modi, but Doug unexpectedly appears, leading to chaos and Modi's death, while Shaw claims the second treasure map for himself. Morgan punishes Shaw for his betrayal but cannot shake off Doug's pursuit. Ultimately, the crew mutinies, and Morgan loses the Morning Star. Although Shaw helps Morgan locate the treasure on Cutthroat Island, obtaining it proves to be no easy task under the blockade of Doug and the officials.
