After a world nuclear war, the government injects everyone with a drug that numbs emotional nerves, causing people to close off their feelings and become zombies. John Preston (played by Christian Bale) is a senior official in the government military department. He destroys all artworks and crafts, killing anyone who fails to suppress their emotions. His colleague, Errol Partridge (played by Sean Bean), is not spared for possessing a banned book. During a mission, John encounters Mary O'Brien (played by Emily Watson). She leads John to stop taking the drug, attempting to experience what it is like to have feelings. He becomes enchanted by the wondrous and moving sights that appear in his life for the first time and feels deep guilt and remorse for the daily destruction of art. His abnormal behavior is noticed by a new colleague, Brandt (played by Taye Diggs), who has been spying on him and seeks to test John's true nature. Between work and ethics, danger and comfort, emotion and depravity, what choices will John make?
