"Rudy" is based on the true story of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger. Rudy (played by Sean Astin) and his family are very passionate about football and are devoted supporters of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After graduating high school, Rudy aspired to attend Notre Dame but had to give up his dreams due to poor academic performance and ended up working in a steel mill. On his 22nd birthday, a friend gifted him a jacket with "Notre Dame" emblazoned on it and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. The unexpected death of his friend in the steel mill devastated Rudy, leading him to leave his fiancée and board a train to Notre Dame. Once at the university, he worked exceptionally hard in both his studies and training. Through sheer determination, he was selected to join the school's football team as a substitute, but he didn’t get a chance to play until a crucial moment in an important game, where he helped secure the victory for the team. His parents and family, who were present at the game, were immensely excited. After 1975, no other Notre Dame player was carried off the field in such a manner. In 1976, Rudy graduated from Notre Dame, and all five of his brothers also went to college and graduated successfully.
