In black and white, with lazy jazz music, the film presents a laid-back protagonist and harmless little jokes, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a Woody Allen movie. This debut work by German director Jan-Ole Gerster narrates the mundane affairs of an ordinary young man living in Berlin. Tom Schilling, known for his role in "Hitler's Boy," is now in his thirties but still looks innocent; he plays the protagonist Niko Fischer, a law student who has dropped out. Niko secretly receives a monthly allowance from his father, while his life can be described as aimless. This ultimately leads to his girlfriend breaking up with him. Afterward, Niko moves to a new place where he meets his new neighbor (Justus von Dohnányi), who is deeply entrenched in a midlife crisis. Indeed, Niko often feels incredibly bored, yet he is reluctant to make any changes. His life source is cut off when his father discovers he has dropped out of school. Despite this, the audience feels a sense of sympathy for the aimless Niko on screen. Niko has a close friend, Matze (Marco Hausmann), who is an unsuccessful actor acting in an emotionally charged WWII-themed drama. The male lead is a Nazi (Andreas Klavith), and unexpectedly, this actor brings Niko an unexpected experience on set.
