There was once a tradition of "family feuds" in America, and the McKays and the Confields were two families embroiled in generations of hatred. In 1810, John McKay and James Confield had a shootout on a rainy night, and both were killed. John's widow took her son far away to New York to escape the feud, while James's father swore to raise his two grandsons to seek revenge. Twenty years later, Willy McKay (played by Buster Keaton) has grown up and is on his way back home to inherit his father's estate. After a slow and uneventful train journey, Willy makes friends with a girl named Virginia. Upon reaching his destination, Willy visits Virginia's home, only to discover that she is the youngest daughter of the Confield family. Virginia's two brothers, upon learning Willy's identity, plan to harm him, but the tradition of "hospitality" prevents them from attacking him in their home, so Willy stays at the Confield house for his safety...
