The story takes place on a picturesque Greek island, where a 14-year-old boy named Yannis (played by François-Xavier Demaison) lives. His mother left him a long time ago, and now he shares a close but strained life with his father, Daemonis (played by Emir Kusturica). Daemonis is a very serious and rigid man, rarely smiling and offering little care to Yannis, which has created increasing distance between them over time.
By chance, Yannis discovers a dying baby pelican on the island. Kind-hearted Yannis secretly adopts the little pelican. Fearing that his father would blame him, Yannis doesn't dare to tell him about the pelican, and as the pelican slowly recovers and grows, Yannis becomes a prominent figure on the island.
